By promoting the establishment and support of EACs across the Commonwealth, the EAC Network is helping local officials to make sound environmental decisions within and across municipal boundaries. Environmental Advisory Councils are appointed volunteers at work protecting the environment through project implementation, site plan and ordinance review, community education and much, much more. Explore this site to learn about the success of EACs in Pennsylvania, how they operate, where they are, and what you could do to start an EAC in your community. The EAC Network Website is a project of the PA Environmental Council and GreenWorks.tv with support from the PA DEP and PA DCNR.

Welcome to all!

Berks County EAC (May 2004)
July heralded the first meeting of the Berks County Environmental Advisory Council (EAC). The seven-member council was formally created by county officials this past spring.

Chaired by Craig Hafer, the council will report to and advise the county commissioners on environmental matters. The EAC has the authority to study environmental issues at the request of the commissioners and make recommendations. The council will also act as a sounding board for residents concerned with various environmental topics.

“The best thing we can do is empower the citizens so they know what is going on,” said Hafer.

According to EAC Secretary Tom Power, one of the first projects the Berks County EAC will undertake is to provide objective information on the status of the environment in the county. The EAC will publish the results in an annual report.

Berks is only the second county in Pennsylvania to form an EAC, behind Butler County. Within Berks County, the townships of Exeter, Washington, Pike, Earl and District have their own EACs. It is hoped that Berks will inspire other counties to create EACs as well.

For more information, contact Tom Power at eac@countyofberks.com.
