If every residence in Pennsylvania replaced one 100-watt incandescent light bulb with a 27-watt compact fluorescent light bulb, we could save 800 million kilowatt-hours of electricity and $44.8 million a year.

ake sure your home is properly insulated, with the appropriate R-rating - or recommended level of insulation - for this climate. You can stay warmer this winter and cut your heating costs by up to 30 percent.

Small businesses also can save by being properly weatherized. Request a free pollution prevention and energy efficiency audit of your small business to find out how you can cut your operating and
environmental costs. Call (877) PA-GREEN or visit www.GreenWorks.tv GreenWords "Site Visits."

  • Use your thermostat! While you're at work or when you go to sleep, set the temperature so that your heat and air aren't used as much. A programmable thermostat can help.

  • Turn your water heater to no higher than 120° F.

  • Use lighting appropriate for the task. A small reading lamp near your favorite chair is more efficient than lighting the whole room.
  • Don't block vents. Vents or radiators blocked with furniture operate less efficiently, raising your heating and cooling costs.

  • Weatherize. Caulking around doors and windows reduces drafts and saves energy dollars.

tay green when staying in hotels. Here are some easy ways to conserve energy and water when on the road:

  • Let hotels know that it's not necessary to change your sheets and towels every day.

  • When you leave your room, turn off the AC/heat, lights, TV and radio.

  • If you receive complimentary newspapers, leave them in the lobby for others to read.

  • Let hotel management know that you want them to conserve and that, as a guest, you're willing to participate.

  • Patronize hotels, airlines and tour operators who support "greening" programs.
  • If you're in the hospitality industry and want to save money, increase competitiveness, earn recognition and protect the environment, take steps to "green" your place of work. Order DEP's publication Greener Accommodations: Opportunities for Pennsylvania's Hospitality Industry

own Gale Campbell never imagined that by adding a second garage for his Classic Roadster,
he'd reduce his energy use and save money. After constructing the garage beneath his porch in Westmore-land County, Campbell decided to turn the porch into a sunroom. With three of the room's walls constructed of double-insulated windows, he is reaping the benefits of his passive solar room.

During winter days, the concrete absorbs sunlight in the room. There's no other heat source, but by the time Campbell comes home from work, the temperature inside is 80 degrees.

He opens his kitchen door and the warm air makes its way throughout the house for several hours. While the sunroom cannot eliminate his gas heating bill, it has decreased his energy costs significantly.

  • Use energy-efficient appliances. Products with the Energy Star® label use 20-40 percent less electricity than comparable new products without the label.

  • Check the seal on your refrigerator. Leaky refrigerator and freezer seals waste a lot of electricity. Make sure those doors are closed tightly!

  • Cover pots and kettles when boiling water. The water will heat up faster, which uses less energy.

  • Only run your dishwasher when it's full to save electricity and hot water.
  • ach day, people statewide are doing incredible things to improve our environment. Soon you'll be able to hear their stories on GreenWorks' upcoming environmental news segment on National Public Radio (NPR). If your local NPR affiliate doesn't carry our environmental news, tell them they can get the segment for free from WHYY 91FM. You also may listen online at www.GreenWorks.tv GreenWords "Public Radio."
ash your clothes at the lowest water temperature possible. The "cold" setting on most washing machines works surprisingly well for cleaning all but the dirtiest, most-stained clothes. For more home energy conservation tips, visit www.GreenWorks.tv GreenWords "Conservation Tips."
ind energy is here in Pennsylvania and growing fast as an alternative energy source. Sold in "blocks" of 400 kilowatt-hours per month, businesses choose the amount of blocks they purchase. Already the program has resulted in the construction of two 80-foot tall wind turbines generating 200,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. As more businesses (and soon residents) buy wind blocks, more turbines will be built. For more information, check #13 on your Free Stuff Card (page 7).
