Natural lighting. High indoor air quality. Good acoustics. These things and more truly make green buildings "Better Places to Learn."

High-performance green buildings make for healthier, happier occupants. When students and teachers feel healthy, happy and alert, that almost always leads to better learning. As public buildings, green schools can also serve as an example for the entire community — a learning opportunity in-and-of-themselves.

On top of that, the money saved from energy-efficient lighting and heating can be redirected into more useful things like new programs, new books and teacher trainings. Watch this video to discover the many ways that green schools can work for your community!

State government is one of the largest building owners in Pennsylvania. While government has often had to play "catch up" keeping pace with the innovation of the private sector, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has long been a leader in using green building technology.

The benefits of this are very real. High performance green buildings reduce energy costs and cut down on pollution emissions, improving indoor air quality and the health of employees. Considering most people spend 90% of their time indoors, these benefits make a whopping amount of sense.

Watch "Furnishing High Performance Green Buildings” to learn how the integrated planning and design of green buildings — coupled with environmentally smart furniture and seating — can lead to increased flexibility and cost savings for a building's entire operations.

This special episode of the award winning GreenWorks for Pennsylvania TV show examines how Pennsylvania state government, in partnership with a private developer, created a cost- effective "green" building through the use of sustainable design and construction materials for the Department of Environmental Protection's Southcentral Regional Office Building, located in Harrisburg. The building is considered to be Pennsylvania's prototype for "green" state office buildings.

    Some facts:
    • The building uses 50 per cent less energy than a conventional commercial building, which results in cost savings of $50,000 annually.

    • Construction materials and furniture components emphasize sustainable sources such as wheat straw, soybean, cork, wood, recycled glass and steel. All of the fabric on the cubicle walls is made from recycled soda bottles. The carpeting is 100 percent recyclable and manufactured with antimicrobials that destroy volatile compounds.

    • The PA DEP selected a 13.4-acre "brownfield" on which to construct the new headquarters.

    • The project was a finalist for the 1998 Civil Engineering Research Foundation (CERFC) Award in the category of Green Technology in a Model Office Building.
