Ray Anderson After graduating from Georgia Institute of Technology in industrial
engineering, Ray Anderson guided his company, Interface, Inc., to become
one of the worlds largest makers of interior furnishings. In 1994,
he then revolutionized the carpet and flooring industry by embarking
on a mission to make Interface a sustainable corporation, leading a
worldwide war on waste and pioneering the processes of sustainable development.
Named one of Americas 100 Best Companies To Work For
in l997 and l998 by FORTUNE magazine, Interface has diversified and
globalized its businesses with sales in 110 countries and manufacturing
facilities on four continents. In addition to carpet tiles and broadloom
carpet marketed under several brands, Interface also manufactures and
markets specialty fabrics, architectural products such as raised access
flooring, and a variety of chemicals used in commercial office installations.
While Interface is noted within the industry for its commitment to high
quality design and innovation, the company is fast gaining a reputation
as a corporation carrying the banner for the environment. Although the
company has not yet attained its goal of complete sustainability, it
is investing in developing processes and technologies to reach it. Harnessing
solar energy and providing raw materials by harvesting and recycling
carpet and other petrochemical products, Interface continues to eliminate
waste and harmful emissions from its operations. Mr. Anderson was named
co-chairman of the Presidents Council on Sustainable Development
in l997, and received the inaugural Millennium Award from Global Green,
presented by Mikhail Gorbachev in September l996. He was also recognized
in l996 as the Ernest & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for the Southeast
Region and as the Georgia Conservancys Conservationist of the
Year in l997. |
