That is correct! These efforts have helped lead to the return of the wild brown trout. This signals the beginning of a new era for Pennsylvania’s waterways through the work of citizens groups, government agencies and the mining industry. But, more work is needed in the areas of; pollution control, reclamation, community development, conservation and public involvement. SCRIP (Stonycreek Conemaugh River Improvement Project)
Describes how coal mining causes pollution and includes studies and pictures of the effects of acid mine
drainage. Also a link to the River Keepers Program to get the community involved by adopting a
section of stream to monitor, observe and document for PH levels and the health of fish and plant life.

USGS (U.S.Geological Survey)- Water Resources of Pennsylvania
Explores the effects of coal mining on water quality, limestone treatment efforts and current hydrologic conditions. Also includes interactive links for kids and provides teachers with classroom activities and lesson plans.
