WATCH BIRTH OF BABY BIRDS, LIVE ON GREENWORKSCHANNEL.ORG
HARRISBURG (April 27, 2000)-Now, through unprecedented Internet
video, Internet users can watch and listen live, moment by
moment as a pair of endangered Peregrine falcons hatch their
first clutch of eggs.
All Internet users have to do to watch the falcons' changing
behavior on-line is log onto GreenWorks.tv at http://www.greenworkschannel.org,
click on the falcon and choose "See It Live!"
GreenWorks.tv Coordinating Producer, Christine Milbank said,
"This phenomenon truly reveals the amazing power of the Internet."
The two falcons, which became a pair a little over a year
ago, have laid four eggs since March 27. Usually the falcons
incubate the eggs for 31 days after the clutch is complete.
Officials are expecting the eggs to hatch around May 5, but
say they could come as early as April 30.
The peregrine falcon, one of the 39 species of falcons in
the world, was erased from existence in the United States
in the 1960s, largely due to the crop pesticide DDT. With
the ban of DDT in 1972, the work of the Pegrine Fund and financial
support from the Endangered Species Act, the falcons have
now made one of the strongest comebacks of any endangered
species. In Pennsylvania alone, the number of falcons nesting
has increased from 4 pairs in 1990 to 10 pairs in 1999.
Besides the live falcon video, GreenWorks.tv video website
is home to over 250 environmental videos, as well as live
chats, webcasts, links and message boards that provide a forum
for discussion and communication about environmental issues.
GreenWorks.tv is a production of the Environmental Fund for
Pennsylvania (EFP), a not-for-profit federation that does
collective education and fundraising for 19 Pennsylvania environmental
organizations. The live video of the falcons is made available
through a partnership between EFP and the Department of Environmental
Protection (DEP).
