John Fischer has been called one of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania's "most cutting-edge agricultural innovators." Fischer — an organic dairy farmer and a member of the Old Order Amish — has donated the stream-bank of a creek that runs through his pasture for a conservation experiment. Environmental groups are planting commercially valuable shrubs and perennials along this stream buffer to see whether they can reduce the soil erosion and, in turn, improve water quality and wildlife habitat. Streams like the one on Fischer's property, which flow into the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay, are among the most impaired water sources in the state.
