It drains 13 million acres in 3 states and is 444 miles long. The Susquehanna River is the largest river in the eastern united states. It contributes 18 million gallons a minute to the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. To coordinate how the river's resources are used and preserved, Congress created the Susquehanna River Basin Commission in 1974. With one representative each from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, and the Federal Government, the Commission is responsible for water resource planning and protection in the basin.
