Fourth graders at Spruance Elementary School in Northeast Philadelphia spent the last year learning about electricity and practicing energy saving techniques. Judith Hurvitz says the lessons added depth to her students' regular coursework.

We did a lot of really interesting things with this. It's not just science. We did it with math, with calculations as far as energy savings. Even with history, we went back in time with George Washington and we explained to him what electricity was through writing.

Hurvitz says students also focused on turn off lights in empty rooms, and closing windows and doors to save on heating and cooling. Hurvitz says small activties can save the school money while teaching children social responsibility.

The children do see results. And they do feel good about helping the world. I mean children are really good about that. They like to do things that will help others.

Hurvitz adds she'd like to expand the program beyond simple energy savings. Spruance Elementary's pursuing a grant to install a windmill on-site to generate non-polluting electricity for the school.
