Moo...
Natural Acres Farm in Central Pennsylvania is one of the few farsms in the state raising cattle on grass. Steve Shelley is in charge of marketing beef for Natural Acres. He says most cows are raised on commercial feed made from grains like corn.
It's much easier to go out and dump a bucket of feed into a pen, for that animal to eat, than it is for that animal to be out, to get the best benefit from the soil.
Shelley says raising cows on grass takes longer... but it's better
for the cows and health-conscious consumers are willing to
pay nearly twice as much for the beef.
Jo Robinson runs the website "eatwild.com," which collects research on grass-fed cattle. She says there are a number of reasons people might be attracted to grass-fed beef.
It's free of hormones and antibiotices, lower in saturated fat, and higher in omega 3 fatty acids, higher in vitamin E, and a number of other substances.
Robinson says cows that eat grass also have high levels of conjugated
linoleic acid," which prevents tumor growth in cattle. It's not
yet clear if just eating grass-fed beef could help fight cancer
in humans.
