"It's
worth it to me because I can actually see the satisfaction in people I
get to meet interesting characters that I enjoy talking with so
all in all it is quite satisfying to me." Joseph Griffin, President of The Oley Institute, worked very
hard in getting the Equity Project off the ground this year.
"It's
just an opportunity for people to get such good high quality fruits
and vegetables that they don't otherwise get here in the city and
of course for prices that they would never find at the supermarkets.
I think it's a shame that it can't be expanded to more places, more
parishes. It certainly isn't difficult to do. Provide a couple tables
and some space. I would hope that more places would come aboard
next year because it's no inconvenience." Father Edward Deliman, Visitation Blessed Virgin Mary Church,
in the Kensington Section of Philadelphia agreed to allow the Equity
Project set up a small market in front of the church each Sunday.
"I
think that this is the best thing they could have done for this
neighborhood because a lot of people can't afford to go to the market
and get fresh produce but here they can." Carmen Ortiz started visiting the Equity Project's market outside
the Visitation Blessed Virgin Mary Church about a month ago and
believes it's a great way to help people.
"I
think it's a good program. It gets fresh picked fruits and vegetables
to people at really good prices. A lot of people don't buy fresh
food at the supermarket because it's too expensive. This gives them
a place and the food is really tasty."
Linda, market stand employee, who runs the stand every Tuesday and
Sunday with her daughter Jennifer
"I've
always had a lot of fruit and vegetables but now I'm getting it
at a cheaper price and that helps a lot, it's a lot fresher then
when you buy it at the supermarket you don't know how long it's
been sitting there. This at least is nice and fresh and doesn't
get a chance to sit."
Rita Mount, parishner at the Visitation Blessed Virgin Mary Church
in Kensington shares her thoughts on the importance of this project
in her neighborhood.
