This episode of the award-winning GreenWorks for Pennsylvania TV show looks at the issues facing Pennsylvania's environment in the 21st Century. Learn about the Governor's 21st Century Environment Commission and the issues it identified as priorities to be addressed in order to maintain and enhance our quality of life in Pennsylvania.

In this episode you will:

  • Meet Caren Glotfelty, co-chair of the 21st Century Environment Commission, who discusses environmental priorities including responsible land use, environmental education, conservation of resources, and a healthy lifestyle for the people of Pennsylvania
  • Tour Farmview, a Bucks County housing development that represents the effort of its developers and the Natural Lands Trust to build in a way that preserves part of the open land upon which a community is built;
  • Visit Park Forest Elementary School students, in State College, who learn about the environment in a hands-on way, and relate it to all aspects of their school curriculum and lives;
  • Tour Washington's Landing, an island in the middle of Pittsburgh's Allegheny River that, over the years, has served as a garbage dump, a slaughterhouse, and a deserted brownfield. The island is now being rebuilt into upscale waterfront housing and office space through Pennsylvania's Land Recycling Program;
  • Meet the Harrisburg Young Professionals, who worked together with the Pennsylvania Urban and Community Forestry Council, the Capitol Greenbelt Association, PennDOT, and others to plant trees in a run-down section of the city, one step in revitalizing and greening Harrisburg;
  • Meet Catherine Minnis, President Emeritus of Habitat for Humanity in West Philadelphia, who discusses the group's efforts to revitalize a deserted section of the inner city and stem suburban sprawl.

GreenWorks TV hosts Tom Sexton and Jaime Smith come to you from historic Independence Hall in Philadelphia for a chance to look back at our past and look forward to our future.
