Pennsylvania's
First Green Building: The South Central Regional Office Building
of the PA Department of Environmental
Protection
Length: 27 minutes
This special episode of the award winning GreenWorks for Pennsylvania
TV show examines how Pennsylvania state government, in partnership
with a private developer, created a cost- effective "green"
building through the use of sustainable design and construction materials
for the Department of Environmental Protection's Southcentral Regional
Office Building, located in Harrisburg. The building is considered
to be Pennsylvania's prototype for "green" state office
buildings.
Some facts:
-
The building uses 50 per cent less energy than a conventional
commercial building, which results in cost savings of $50,000
annually.
-
Construction materials and furniture components emphasize sustainable
sources such as wheat straw, soybean, cork, wood, recycled glass
and steel. All of the fabric on the cubicle walls is made from
recycled soda bottles. The carpeting is 100 percent recyclable
and manufactured with antimicrobials that destroy volatile compounds.
-
The PA DEP selected a 13.4-acre "brownfield" on which
to construct the new headquarters.
-
The project was a finalist for the 1998 Civil Engineering Research
Foundation (CERFC) Award in the category of Green Technology
in a Model Office Building.
This episode, produced by the Environmental Fund for Pennsylvania
and the Resource Communications Group, was a Finalist in the 1999
Telly Awards, which recognizes outstanding non-network and cable
television programming throughout the United States. The episode
also won an award at the International Chicago Film Festival.
