Closing the Loop in Industry — Tyrone, Blair County, Pennsylvania

Length: 3 minutes

The Westvaco Corporation saved its Tyrone, Pennsylvania plant from financial disaster with closed-loop recycling. In closed-loop recycling, a company turns its own trash back into materials it can use. Westvaco recycles undeliverable mail from the U.S. Postal Service into envelopes and other paper goods, and sells them back to the Postal Service. This change made good business sense, because it gave the Westvaco plant a certain source of raw materials and a certain market for its products.
