Pollution Prevention

Length: 27 minutes

This episode of the award winning GreenWorks for Pennsylvania TV
show features individuals, businesses and communities from across Pennsylvania doing their share to stop pollution before it starts.

In this episode you will learn about:

  • Several winners of the 1997 Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence including:

  • AMP Incorporated, in Harrisburg, for recycling PVC and other packaging materials;

  • the Westfield Tanning Company, in Westfield, for reusing organic waste products as fertilizer for local farmers;

  • Mack Trucks Remanufacturing Center, in Middletown, for eliminating hazardous waste streams generated from harmful solvents;

  • the Volunteer Initiative for Pollution Prevention-a partnership between environmental groups, regulatory agencies, utilities, and industry in the Pittsburgh area-that encourages companies to voluntarily reduce the levels of one of their pollutants to far below regulatory requirements;

  • The Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program promoted by Clean Water Action and used by the Great Valley School District in Montgomery County; IPM enables the school to eliminate pesticides that can endanger students' health while maintaining control over pests in school cafeterias and other sensitive areas;

  • The Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA), an organization that teaches farmers how to preserve resources and reduce their effect on the environment, which includes ways to grow healthy, profitable crops without pesticides;

  • The Home Energy Audit program, operated by the Energy Coordinating Agency, which helps low-income residents of Philadelphia increase their homes' energy efficiency and keeps their homes healthy and safe;

  • A constructed wetland in Union County that treats urban non-point source pollution, such as fuel drippings and automotive fluids from shopping mall parking lots;

  • PA CleanWays' litter cleanup and prevention program in western Pennsylvania, which harnesses the energy of a community to remove illegal dumps and keep them liter free; and

  • The Litterbug Hotline Program, run by the Pennsylvania Resources Council and the PA Department of Environmental Protection, a community-based awareness resource that reminds us all that our own actions matter.

GreenWorks TV hosts Tom Sexton and Jaime Smith come to you from a football field, a basketball court, a golf course, and other sporting venues to reinforce the concept that pollution prevention is a team effort.
