Protecting our Watersheds II

Length: 27 minutes

This episode of the award winning GreenWorks for Pennsylvania TV show takes another look at the ways in which Pennsylvanians are doing their part to protect their watersheds, those bodies of water and surrounding land that provide fresh water for daily use.

This episode profiles:
  • GreenWorks correspondent Jaclyn D'Auria answers the question, "What is a watershed?"

  • Dr. Hugh Archer, the PA Department of Environmental Protection's Deputy for Water Management, and Jo Ellen Litz, of the Swatara Creek Watershed Association, who discuss the importance of watershed protection;

  • The innovative watershed curriculum of "Environmental Ed," through which Radnor Middle School students in Montgomery County spend an entire school year learning almost all academic subjects through the lens of watersheds;

  • Maya Van Rossom, the Delaware Riverkeeper-the "spokesperson" of the Delaware River-her full-time job is to protect the river;

  • Students and senior citizens who participated in Water SnapShot '98, an Earth Day survey of the water quality in each of Pennsylvania's five watersheds, sponsored by PA Departments of Environmental Protection and Conservation and Natural Resources, as well as the Delaware River Basin Commission;

  • The Stream ReLeaf program, in which volunteers around the state plant "buffer zones" of trees and shrubs along thousands of miles of waterways to prevent pollution and to create green recreation areas;

  • John Geesaman, an Adams County farmer who worked with his county Conservation District to implement "best management practices" on his farm, such as stream bank fencing and other tactics which ensure that soil and fertilizer stay on his farm instead of eroding into nearby waterways; and

  • GreenWorks Volunteer of the Month, Paul Thomas of PA CleanWays in Westmoreland County, who helps clean up littered communities, teaches school children about the importance of the environment, and much more.

GreenWorks TV hosts Tom Sexton and Jaime Smith come to you from the University of Pennsylvania's Morris Arboretum, where they interview employee Bob Gutowsky about the Arboretum's efforts to make a stream that runs through the property a showcase of stream restoration techniques.
