Shaping Our Communities

Length: 27 minutes

This episode of the award-winning GreenWorks for Pennsylvania TV show focuses on people working to prevent urban sprawl, protect parks and plan for a greener Pennsylvania.

In this episode you will:

  • Meet Bob Riahi, a Lancaster County developer who works to preserve land and community by building more houses per acre and by adding porches, sidewalks, businesses and common areas that create the feeling of an old-time neighborhood;

  • Visit the Allentown Paint site in Lehigh County, a former deserted industrial site or brownfield, where a new owner, the Allentown Economic Development Corp. and the PA Department of Environmental Protection are working together under the state's Land Recycling Program to clean and restore the warehouse to productive use;

  • Learn how the city of Meadville, together with some smaller neighboring municipalities and the Pennsylvania Environmental Council, is undergoing a land use "visioning" process that helps the towns plan for future growth while preserving open space and encouraging prosperity;

  • Meet Jack and Claire Donahue, an Adams County couple who have sold the development rights of their farm to the Adams County Conservancy. The Donahues are not farmers but want to conserve land and preserve the Commonwealth's heritage;

  • Meet Jack Myers, the GreenWorks Volunteer of the Month, who has played a role in the development of Two-Mile Run County Park in Venango County.

GreenWorks TV hosts Tom Sexton and Debra Wolf-Goldstein come to you from charming Elizabethtown in Lancaster County. Elizabethtown is considered a model of good land use, with a balance of commercial, residential, and industrial areas that all contribute toward a sense of community.
