Touch the
Water
Length: 27 minutes
This episode of the award-winning GreenWorks for Pennsylvania TV
show focuses on water by getting out there in the natural world
and experiencing water up close.
In this episode, you will meet:
-
Passengers and crew of the A.J. Meerwald, a restored 1928 oyster
schooner that sails inland waters to teach city kids about life
on the river as well as the creatures alive in it. The Meerwald
sails under the flags of the Pennsylvania Environmental Council,
the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, and
other organizations;
-
Students from Chester County's Oxford High School, who canoed
the Octoraro Creek with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to explore
the concept of a watershed and its important role in providing
clean, fresh water for daily use;
-
Residents of the Babbs Creek Watershed, in Tioga County, who
joined forces with the Pennsylvania Environmental Defense Foundation
to clean and restore a creek that had been dead-unable to support
any life-forms-for over 100 years due to the effect of deep
coal mining and acid mine drainage;
-
Senior Citizens and students who worked together through the
Environmental Alliance for Senior Involvement (EASI) to plant
a riparian buffer along the Trindle Springs Run, near Harrisburg,
which will improve the quality of the watershed;
-
Angie Halaja, a volunteer with the Sierra Club of Pennsylvania's
Harrisburg chapter who organizes the annual Susquehanna River
Clean-Up, which both cleans a portion of the river and unites
public attention on the river's role and impact on the quality
of our life.
GreenWorks TV hosts Tom Sexton and Debra Wolf Goldstein bring the
show to you from the Lehigh River, which played a key role during
earlier industrial years in the region. Tom and Debra take part in
the Wildland Conservancy's annual Sojourn, a canoe trip promoting
river awareness, water education and stewardship principles, and a
positive water experience.
