Transportation and the Environment

Length: 27 minutes

In this episode you will meet:

  • A commuter in Pittsburgh who rides the rails to work, sailing past miles of traffic.

  • A resident of Happy Valley, who breathes easier because the Centre Area Transit Authority uses alternative fuel. Authorities on the CATA system talk about why they switched from diesel to compressed natural gas, and how easy and successful the transition has been;

  • Herb Wiley, owner of Wiley's Auto Body shop in Chester County, which initiated the Automotive Society of America's Green Star Shop Program. The Program teaches automotive shops to operate with less waste and pollution. Wiley's is also the site for a visit by the Mobile Outreach for Pollution Prevention (M.O.P.P.). This project, sponsored in part by the PA DEP, travels the country educating automotive professionals about ways to minimize their effect on the environment.

  • Residents of Philadelphia who commute and exercise by using bike lanes installed by the City of Philadelphia and the Bicycle Coalition of the Delaware Valley.

GreenWorks TV hosts Tom Sexton and Jaime Smith guide you through this episode as they roller blade, bike and stroll along rail-trails around Harrisburg.

Produced (1998) by the Environmental Fund for Pennsylvania for the GreenWorks for Pennsylvania Television Program.
