Growing Greener represents a historic opportunity for Pennsylvanians to protect and restore our environment. Signed into law on Dec. 15, 1999, the Growing Greener initiative enables DEP to appropriate nearly $240 million over five years to watershed restoration and protection, abandoned mine reclamation, and oil and gas well plugging projects.

A variety of organizations are eligible for Growing Greener grants. Counties, local governments, economic development authorities, conservation districts, watershed associations and other nonprofit groups involved in watershed restoration and protection may apply.

Five categories of watershed projects may be funded through Growing Greener:
• Organization of a watershed group
• Watershed assessments
• Development of a watershed restoration or protection plan
• Implementation of a watershed restoration or protection plan
• Demonstration, education and outreach projects

At the heart of Growing Greener lies an investment in our communities. Having awarded more than $80 million over the past year, this initiative is providing a newfound hope and enthusiasm for communities committed to the restoration and protection of our watersheds. Grassroots mobilization and local energy are generating amazing results across the Commonwealth - just ask any one of the Governor's Award for Watershed Stewardship honorees. And, the Growing Greener approach is bringing watershed protection results far greater than what we ever could accomplish through regulation and government action alone.
