This year we recognize the first annual Governor's Award for Watershed Stewardship winners. The honorees range from individuals, to watershed associations, to entire municipalities. The common denominator among all our nominees is a heartfelt dedication to protecting our natural resources and preserving the integrity of Pennsylvania's diverse landscape. In December 1999, Gov. Ridge signed into law "Growing Greener," the largest-ever investment of state funds - nearly $650 million - to address Pennsylvania's critical environmental concerns. Since then, watershed groups, local governments and conservation districts have used these state dollars to improve our environment across Pennsylvania. Whether it's developing a management plan, coordinating strategic partnerships, implementing restoration projects or teaching Pennsylvanians about the value of preserving our natural resources, our award winners have taken the initiative to safeguard the lands they know and the environment and communities they care about. Let's keep up the momentum! Why not join this year's group of outstanding watershed stewards by taking advantage of the services DEP can offer? Together, we'll make sure that every Pennsylvania watershed receives the care and respect it deserves and keep Pennsylvania Growing Greener! David E. Hess |
