The Palisades Region Watershed Partnership
Contact: Environmental Results: 3 townships joined to protect surface water and groundwater resources. 2 streams designated as higher quality. |
Partnerships Townships Band Together to Protect Region's Resources
The townships have instituted numerous water studies, including a U.S. Geological Survey water study that focused on the relationship between regional groundwater and surface water resources in the Palisades Region. The findings highlighted the link between surface and groundwater sources and the importance of protecting the quality of regionally connected water resources. The findings have led to further public information projects and watershed conservation plans like the Tinicum Creek Rivers Conservation Plan. To protect valuable waterways, the townships petitioned the state Environmental Quality Board to re-designate the Tinicum and Tohickon Creeks. Following in-depth research and water quality monitoring Tinicum Creek has been upgraded to an Exceptional Value (EV) waterway and there is a pending petition to also upgrade the Tohickon Creek from High Quality (HQ) to Exceptional Value (EV). The townships have developed new open space conservation plans that will place stream corridors, recharge areas and natural areas and habitats under protection. In addition, a Tohickon Creek Watershed Study is underway and numerous other projects are in the works. The Palisades partnership also participates in DEP's annual SNAPSHOT program; delivers conservation presentations to local schools; conducts field identification work to complete the Bucks County Natural Resource Inventory; and labels streams and tributaries with identifying signage. "Tinicum's planning efforts have focused on the
protection of groundwater and surface water resources for the last 10
years. Our successful partnership with the neighboring municipalities
within our watershed has increased public awareness and participation
that promotes protective measures for our fragile resources." |
