On behalf of 12 million Pennsylvanians, I congratulate the winners of the first Governor's Award for Watershed Stewardship! For years, conservation groups, municipalities and employers have been actively engaged in projects to protect Pennsylvania's watersheds. Last year, to honor these dedicated individuals and organizations, we created the Governor's Award for Watershed Stewardship. This year, we recognize 25 outstanding projects - projects that make a real difference in protecting the health of Pennsylvania's valuable watersheds. As you read through the projects highlighted in this booklet, you will notice that a key ingredient in each and every watershed initiative is teamwork. Without cooperation among individuals from diverse stakeholder groups and across municipal and county lines, you wouldn't see this kind of success. We are pleased to foster this success through our "Growing Greener" and "Growing Smarter" initiatives. I am honored to present to you the 2001 winners of the Governor's Award for Watershed Stewardship featured on the following pages. And, I invite you to join their ranks by initiating a watershed program of your own and applying for an award in 2002. Following the example set by these environmental stewards ensures the sustainability of our incomparable quality of life for years to come. Tom Ridge |
