Education Brings Together Scientists and Students

Founded above a garage in 1966 as a field research station for the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Stroud Water Research Center has evolved into a top-notch independent research facility. The center is dedicated to understanding, preserving and restoring streams, rivers and their watersheds. With ongoing projects in Pennsylvania and Costa Rica, the center's extensive education programs have expanded public awareness and appreciation of fresh water ecology in Pennsylvania and around the world.

At the Stroud Center, the education program is designed as an ongoing public conversation in which scientists and educators alike communicate research findings and ideas to a broad audience, learning from others involved in protecting watersheds. The audiences range from scientific colleagues across the globe to middle school students down the road.

One of the Stroud Center's most popular activities is the "Leaf Packet Experiment Kit," which incorporates Stroud Center science with a set of classroom and field activities relating to riparian forest restoration and stream ecology. In one experiment, students investigate conditions in a local stream by placing small bags of leaves in the water to attract local insects and microorganisms. While monitoring the consumption of the leaves by stream organisms, the children learn about the integral connection between the stream and riparian forest.

The Leaf Pack Network, a new website under development, will serve as an Internet resource, providing access to stream ecology data and a wide variety of content areas about stream organisms, watershed research, riparian restoration and water resources. This information is gathered by participating schools, teachers and the Stroud Center, and is piloted by teachers in Pennsylvania and New York.

Work done by the Stroud Center has received various awards and recognition from the U.S. Congress, the National Science Foundation and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

" A community that is knowledgeable about the vital link between land use and water quality is our best hope of protecting water resources for the future."
