Message from Governor Schweiker
Thanks
to the contributions of thousands of Pennsylvanians, our Commonwealth
continues to be a leader in watershed stewardship.
Our "Growing Greener" initiative is providing
the necessary resources to help Pennsylvanians protect and improve
their watersheds. Over the program's first three years, more than
188 miles of stream buffers were planted, 4,200 acres of wetlands
were restored, more than 2,000 acres of abandoned mines were reclaimed,
and 1,242 abandoned oil and gas wells were plugged. Along the way,
we've helped more than 100 new watershed groups to form.
The Governor's Award for Watershed Stewardship program,
now in its third year, recognizes Pennsylvanians who are making
a difference by protecting the Commonwealth's valuable watersheds.
Watershed Stewardship award winners have produced
impressive results. In just two years, 50 award winners have removed
143,760 pounds of trash; installed 61,564 feet of streambank fencing;
stabilized 7,452 feet of streambank; restored 44,271 feet of riparian
buffer; and created 2,000 acres of wetlands.
Congratulations to this year's winners of the Governor's Award for
Watershed Stewardship. Your leadership is inspiring, and together
we will ensure the sustainability of our environment and quality
of life for years to come.
