Message from Secretary David E. Hess
Congratulations to the winners of the 2002 Governor's
Award for Watershed Stewardship!
Through Growing Greener, we have discovered an enormous
grassroots effort committed to the restoration and protection of
Pennsylvania's watersheds. This year, in celebration of this enthusiasm,
we honor 24 outstanding individuals and organizations with a 2002
Governor's Award for Watershed Stewardship.
This year's winners have proven their commitment to
sustaining the health of Pennsylvania's watersheds. Together, they
have removed 142,760 pounds of trash; installed 25,783 feet of streambank
fencing; stabilized 3,752 feet of streambank; created 810 acres
of wetlands; reclaimed 200 acres of abandoned mine land; and improved
48.5 miles of mine drainage polluted streams.
At the cornerstone of these impressive accomplishments
are partnerships, as this year's winners have forged 191 partnerships,
involved 154 stakeholders and formed 52 watershed organizations.
This network of watershed stewards continues to grow and ensures
the sustainability of the progress we have made in protecting our
watersheds.
As part of this year's award program, we have introduced
the Watershed Stewardship Educator of the Year Award to recognize
the importance of continuing this momentum. Environmental education
is a key component in preparing future watershed stewards to carry
on the legacy we have built in Pennsylvania.
I invite you to join the ranks of our Watershed Stewardship Award
winners by getting involved in the protection and restoration of
your watershed and applying for a Governor's Award in 2003.
I am honored to present to you the 2002 winners of the Governor's
Award for Watershed Stewardship.
David E. Hess
