Join the Legacy
In 1999, the Ridge-Schweiker Administration signed
into law "Growing Greener" - the largest-ever investment
of state funds to address Pennsylvania's critical environmental
issues. Since then, watershed groups, local governments and conservation
districts have taken advantage of these state dollars to implement
watershed protection projects.
This year marks the second annual Governor's Award
for Watershed Stewardship. These awards honor the individuals and
organizations engaged in safeguarding and enhancing our environment
across Pennsylvania.
Any Pennsylvania individual, business, government agency, municipality,
nonprofit organization, farm or agribusiness engaged in watershed
restoration efforts in Pennsylvania is eligible to apply for a Governor's
Award for Watershed Stewardship. For the next round, some portion
of the project must have been implemented during the 2002 calendar
year to be eligible for consideration.
In 2003, awards will be issued for projects
in four categories:
Watershed Partnerships - Projects
that develop unique and creative partnerships among members of a
watershed community to identify issues of concern, build consensus
and carry out initiatives.
Watershed Assessment and Planning -
Projects that assess watershed conditions and/or
plan activities that lead to a watershed restoration or protection
plan that addresses non-point source pollution.
Watershed Protection and Restoration Projects
- Projects that are implemented to effectively
reduce, eliminate or prevent non-point source pollution within a
watershed.
Watershed Demonstration, Education and Outreach
- Projects that demonstrate innovative
technologies or approaches to watershed restoration and protection,
as well as those that educate the public about watershed protection
and restoration.
Projects will be evaluated by an independent
panel of judges that will select winners based on the following
criteria:
Protection -
demonstrated commitment to protecting the environment;
Teamwork - involvement
of business, government officials and community members;
Public Service - commitment
to the public's best interest;
Communication - effective
outreach to stakeholders;
Pollution Prevention - environmental
results through pollution prevention at its source; and
Economic Impact - project
executed cost-effectively.
