Canada Litter King
Shiban Khan

There are many people who believe in the cause of environmentalism and dedicate their lives for a better tomorrow. However, not many would actually go as far as Gordon Ransom, hailing from British Columbia, Canada. Appalled by the increasing pile of waste in Canadian streets, he legally changed his name to Canada Litter King, and pledged cleaning up for a beautiful Canada to be his top priority.

Donning an ice cream bucket for a crown and accompanied by "Garbo King," a lively trashcan (who can also play jazz!), Canada Litter King is easy to spot as he goes about picking trash from the streets in the town of Comox. Having quite a tumultuous early life, he became associated with litter pickup when he worked for an industrial complex as a janitor. Gradually, he became progressively passionate about waste lying all around, and started cleaning up substantial amounts from the streets everyday.

Canada Litter King has a simple yet strong message, which combines patriotism and environmental consciousness very aptly: Proud Canadians Don't Litter. He sponsored a writing contest with a litter theme at a local school for students aged 6-18, and it was a great success. He also talks to young people about importance of litter clean up, provides rewards for children's clean up actions, and is the founder of a charitable organization for litter awareness.

His vision for a cleaner Canada is apparent in his elaborate plans for a "historic cross-Canada cleanup, pride promotion fundraiser." In his opinion, "If I can serve my country's well being, cleaning up, helping tourism, etc, and raise funds for causes, what a win-win situation! During this well planned cleanup trip, it is estimated I will clean up in some three hundred communities, and possibly gather up an estimated 250,000 pieces of — you name it — litter!"
