Save the Bay Online
Arthur Stamoulis

Listeners to GreenWorks Radio may remember the story of EcoISP, an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that donates half of its profits to environmental causes of its customers' choosing. Other ISPs, such as SolarHost and Webctel, have tried to capitalize on Internet users' environmental consciousness by offering webhosting powered by renewable energy.

Most recently, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has gotten into the green ISP act, by partnering with Velox Communications, Inc. to offer its members and others dial-up internet service through a program called Save the Bay Online.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is the largest conservation organization dedicated solely to saving the Chesapeake Bay, one of the nation's most environmentally and economically important natural areas. Headquartered in Maryland, CBF works throughout the 64,000 square-mile Chesapeake Bay Watershed, which extends from Maryland into Virginia and Pennsylvania. Customers who sign up for Save the Bay Online internet service will be helping to support CBF's environmental work, as 10% of each month's approximately $20 fee will be donated directly to the organization.

In addition to regular dial-up internet service, Save the Bay Online subscribers receive a special "@savethebay.net" email address, 24/7 technical support and membership in an online community of people with similar interests. Subscribers can also choose to have CBF's website as their start-up homepage, connecting them with current Bay-related news and information.

"We designed our affinity ISP to be a best of breed Internet Access product that our partners can confidently offer to their members and supporters," says Velox President Dwayne Shipely. "Working with CBF was particularly compelling for us, as we live in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and have experienced the great results that support of CBF can produce."

"We're excited about this new partnership," adds CBF President William Baker. "It will allow our members and other supporters who subscribe to Save the Bay Online to have regular contact with us, to keep abreast of important and timely Bay issues, and to stand ready to take action when we ask them. In addition, CBF will receive revenue which will help us fulfill our mission to protect and restore the Bay."
