Turn
the Tide http://www.newdream.org/turnthetide
Emily Clinch
What if you could save the world in nine easy steps? Well, maybe that's
a little too ambitious. But if enough people follow the same nine
easy steps, the impact can be enormous. After asking leading scientists
and environmentalists about the most important steps towards a cleaner
planet, the Center for a New American Dream put together a list of
simple actions-from eliminating pesticides to eliminating one meal
a week of red meat-that anyone can take without making drastic lifestyle
changes. Participants can register to track their personal progress
online, and can also see the overall impact of the entire program.
Every thousand people, over the course of a year, can save 48 million
gallons of water, 170 trees, 12,250 pounds of marine life, and keep
4 million pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. The extra
motivation of seeing the group's impact also pushes Turn the Tide's
ninth step-signing up two more friends. As the program spreads more
and more, the environmental impact will be greater and greater. And,
in nine easy steps, you really will be saving the world.
