What
Would Jesus Drive?

"The Lord God took the man and put him
in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it." Genesis,
2:15
With
television commercials airing to targeted markets throughout the Bible
Belt and the Midwest, the What Would Jesus Drive website is already
attracting lots of attention. WWJD is an educational campaign designed
not only to get people to think of transportation decisions as moral
choices, but to "reflect upon the problems associated with transportation
from a biblically orthodox, Christ-centered perspective." Launched
by the publishers of Christian Care, a quarterly environmental magazine
aimed at Christians, the website contains fact sheets, articles, a
discussion forum and even an online pledge, all of which make a strong
case on many grounds against driving SUVs in favor of hybrid cars
and public transportation. But the main controversy stirred up by
the site and the WWJD campaign is their attempts to make environmental
arguments based primarily on a biblical epistemology — not arguing
that transportation choices should be made simply on what's best for
human health and the environment, but that what's best for human health
and the environment are what the bible says God intended.
