I think there may be a problem with my septic system. How often should it be pumped?

You should have your septic tank inspected by a professional immediately. He or she will tell you if it needs to be pumped and if there are any other problems.

Rules for how often septic tanks need to be emptied vary based on the system, and may also be regulated by local sewage ordinances. For the average family of four, however, a septic system typically needs to be pumped out every three years. If you have a larger household, or if you use a garbage disposal, the tank may need to be pumped more frequently than that.

Some signs of a problem include: slow draining toilets, showers or sinks; sewage back-up in the basement or drains; bright green grass or wet areas over the absorption field in your yard; bacteria or nitrates in a nearby drinking well; or any sewage odors. All these symptoms can be avoided through regular inspections.

Your tank should be inspected at least every year. For several reasons, including personal safety, a professional contractor should conduct these inspections. The contractor should measure the level of sludge build-up, inspect the baffles for scum and perform routine maintenance on any lift or distribution pumps associated with your system.

Ignoring your septic system can lead to serious environmental and health risks — and end up costing you thousands of dollars in foolish repairs.
