"What's your environmental New Year's resolution?"

To stop smoking, which means I would stop tossing my cigarette butts on the sidewalk.

— Olivia Burns

My goal this year is to have 1000 tress planted in the impoverished island nation of Haiti, by creating a fund drive to support treegivers.com, a non-profit based organization that sponsors tree planting in local areas, as well as around the world. My special concern for Haiti is that the deforestation in that nation has lead to severe environmental damage. The impoverished populace relies solely on wood for fuel, and has decimated the forest to the point that that part of Hispanola is nearly brown. This has led to an exodus of Haitian nationals to other countries as well. I would hope this effort, accompanied by assistance from other groups to establish other alternative fuel energy sources, will revitalize the area and alleviate the poverty and exodus. Big ideas, I know. I can use some help. Anyone willing to help donate, please contact me at skbiscuit@yahoo.com.

To eat less meat.

— Arthur Stamoulis

I have been shopping in thrift stores for years, but it is my New Year's resolution to buy no new clothing anymore. That way, I will not be contributing to the unjust and destructive industry from which the GAP and others profit.

I have been thinking about all the impacts of new clothes for a few months now. From an environmental perspective, buying new clothes supports the use of tremendous amounts of resources and pesticides (it takes 101 gallons of water to grow a pound of cotton). From a social justice standpoint, many new clothes are made by people working under unacceptable conditions for low wages.

My 2003 new years resolution is to increase my business by 150% which in return helps the environment. A major part of my business is to get natural gas engine/compressor packages into compliance for Air Quality with all federal and state environmental agencies. My year to date (as of Dec 2002) and I have been in business for 10 months, I have gotten over 10,000 horsepower of natural gas engines into compliance and have assisted in installing Low Emission Technology on a lot of these engines to reduce emission levels (i.e.: NOx, CO, and VOC's) by over 800 tons/year for the tri-state area (PA, WV, OH). If you have any questions you can check me out on the web: www.envircomp.com.

I resolve to do my part and help our new Governor Ed Rendell be the greatest environmental leader the state has ever had and support his new Secretary of the DEP to strengthen, not weaken, environmental regulations and enforcement efforts!

— T.J. Gobreski

I will compost more.
